A Brief History
The project stretches about 10 years back in time, and equally far into the future.
In 1991, the Sør-Trøndelag county council decided to draw up a plan for the organization, operation and development of the Trondheim Regional Hospital.
The Government gave the go-ahead for the plan in 1993. An international design competition was held, and in August 1995 the county council chose to use the winning sketch from Frisk Arkitekter and Ernst & Young as a basis for the Development Plan for RIT 2000.
In June 1997, the Storting (Norwegian parliament) accepted the county council's decision regarding the development of a new, integrated university hospital in Øya in Trondheim.
After an increase in the cost estimates, a new agreement was entered into with the State in September 1999.
The project has since been developed, reviewed and analysed at many levels. During the spring of 2001, the Government decided to postpone the start of the building programme to evaluate an alternative location (Dragvoll).
In 2002, however, the Storting decided (May 28.)to build the university hospital at Øya based on the plans for Phase 1 of the building programme.
