Single Rooms and 'Sengetun' (Bed Clusters)

St. Olavs Hospital is the first hospital in Norway to be sompletely based on individual patient rooms. The rooms are organized in clusters called Sengetun (tun = modern English 'town', found as -ton in place names, meaning 'safe enclosure)

All patient centres have been built with single rooms. The wards are organized in  bed clusters, with 7-12 beds in each cluster. An open workstation in the middle makes the staff more accessible to patients.

This design provides for the patient's need for closeness and care, and will enable staff to observe patients easily while covering only short distances.

Bed clusters with single rooms also provide privacy and independence for patients. This design promotes efficient working patterns and enable flexible use of the bed complement.
