Olav Kyrre`s Plaza (Olav Kyrres plass)
- The purpose of Olav Kyrres Plass is to strengthen the feeling of being at the heart of the hospital, says Ragnhild Aslaksen from Helsebygg.
The Head Architect is planning the space in the middle of the hospital area, due for completion in the autumn of 2013, along with landscape architects, artists and architects.

- Olav Kyrres Plass is the final building stone in the hospital facility. This will be the central space of the hospital that tells you that you have “reached” the destination and it will guide you to the various hospital buildings, explains Aslaksen, and reminds us that the main entrance for all clinical centres will face Olav Kyrres Plass.
Olav Kyrres Plass will cover a large area: 120 by 60 metres. This is almost as big as the square in the town centre in Trondheim; however the area at the hospital will be surrounded by high buildings (six floors).
This will enhance the “downtown”-feeling and give associations to areas in the biggest cities in Europe, according to Aslaksen. Consequently a clear, strong and urban design is required.
- We want to create a coherent area, with room for several functions. Parts of the south-facing area will be the outdoor-are for the Knowledge Centre. It can be used for seating-areas outside and become an attractive outdoor area, according to Aslaksen.
Olav Kyrres Plass will be particularly important for traffic and accessibility. Olav Kyrres gate goes through the area as a continuous vain in the hospital area (from July 2011), and it is here the central taxi rank will be located. The area is also very important for access to the Emergency Centre.
Even though it will be a main thoroughfare for traffic, Olav Kyrres Plass will be developed with a green and exuberant touch. The lighting will be great, in particular during the winter months. The “floor” of the area will be designed with a view to make orientation in the area easy – divide into different zones, coloured fields in natural stone, flowerbeds and a fountain. It is an ambition to make traffic in the area safe as well as a usable outdoors are for play and fun.
- Olav Kyrres Plass is also a prioritised area for public art – a decision has been made to invite internationally acknowledged artists to decorate the area. And a larger sculpture will give identity to the area and the hospital, according to Aslaksen.
